You have to like it to want it

Let me elaborate a little….. Life should be all about doing things you enjoy, and when it comes to exercise, there is no exception.

wall ball exerciseFor me, its Crossfit. Coming from a background of playing sports for fitness and fun, I feel I need a purpose to exercise. Crossfit fulfils that purpose for me because I love being part a part of something – a team where I get motivation from others when mine is waning!
I like that its programmed differently every day, and that I get a little nervous every time I step into the box because I know I will have to work hard.
I like the variety, and the unknown is attractive to me. I love it.
Don’t get me wrong though. I didn’t fall in love straight away! The first session was hard – really hard, and I did wonder what I was thinking even contemplating doing another one. But there was enough of a spark ignited to try it again, and from then on every session fanned the flames.

But that’s MY thing. Its not EVERYBODY’S cup of tea.

My point is this. The key to a healthier life comes from finding something you like. Love even. You need to like it in order to be compliant, and stick at it. It may be walking with friends; riding a bike; yoga; or running marathons. Whatever it is, its the thing that’s going to get you active and on the way to a healthier, happier you.

The thing is, is that we are all wonderfully different, so different things drive us as individuals. Some like to use exercise as an opportunity for solitude. Others use it as a way to socialize. I know for many of our members its an opportunity to let off some steam and have a catch up!

So maybe you’re still thinking about yours. Maybe you haven’t done anything since having kids, or maybe what you are currently doing isn’t working for you and you have to drag yourself out the door. Maybe its fear that is holding you back? But if you haven’t found it yet, then keep looking. Get out there and try different things. The cliché is true – you really don’t know unless you try.

But just remember, whatever you do you need to like it – because the more you like it, the more you want it – and then it becomes something that you just don’t want to go without.
